Portmahomackfind accomodation in this area
PORTMAHOMACK (G Port Mo-Cholaig, Colman’s, or Columba’s Port) may claim some association with Columba. It is certainly the best harbour on the entire coast north of Burghead and has been in use as such for a very long time. The present pier was built by Thomas Telford in 1813-16.
Of the two warehouses or girnels, the larger was built in 1779 and the smaller by Lord Cromartie in the 17th century. They were used to store grain before shipment to Edinburgh and other southern markets. The village has many attractive 18th and 19th century houses which curve around the sandy bay. A cast iron drinking fountain celebrates the arrival of gravitation (piped) water in 1877.
