North Highlands Highlight
Loch Fleetfind accomodation in this area
LOCH FLEET (ON fljotr, flood), the tidal estuary of the River Fleet, lies between Golspie and Dornoch. It has a diverse combination of habitats including both salt and freshwater mudflats, saltmarsh, Alderwoods, Pinewoods and sand dunes. The varied surroundings include farmland, woodland and moorland. The unusual combination supports a wide range of wildlife throughout the year.
There are good vantage points on the A9 at the Mound car parks, all along the road which runs along the south side of the loch as well as from the Ferry Links and Balblair Woods.
Residents. Common Seals haul out on sand banks and Otters are present, though rarely seen. Osprey breed here and are regularly seen fishing, while Buzzard are common and Sparrowhawk breed in small numbers. Curlew, Oystercatcher, Redshank, Shelduck, Widgeon, and Teal are present all of the year.
Migrants. In autumn and winter Bar-tailed Godwits, Dunlin, Turnstones, and other waders are present. Greylag and Pink-footed Geese as well as many species of duck may be seen here. Some are in transit and some linger. It is always worthwhile stopping here to scan for birds.
