Dounreay

The pioneer

Once Britain's centre of fast reactor research and development, Dounreay is pioneering the clean-up of major nuclear sites. On current plans, decommissioning will finish by 2036 and UKAEA is working with development agencies to leave a sustainable legacy for the north Highlands. For further information see the Dounreay website.

Dounreay (L)

The Dounreay Visitor Centre is a four-star visitor attraction telling the story of the pioneering work carried out at the site over the last fifty years and how UKAEA is working with the community to establish Caithness as a global centre of excellence in nuclear decommissioning. The exhibition can be enjoyed by the whole family, coach parties are welcome and no booking is necessary. Admission is free. Open daily from Easter to November. 10am to 4pm. Trained guides, picnic area, snacks and refreshments served daily. For further information see the Dounreay Visitor Centre website.

Future plans for the Dounreay exhibition and the £4m Thurso Town Hall redevelopment project can be found on the Caithness Horizons website.
